As we age, the effects of time, gravity, lifestyle, and the environment become visible on our faces. Skin that once glowed with good health begins to look tired and worn. Fine lines develop, wrinkles deepen, and textural irregularities become more and more pronounced as ageing skin loses its natural elasticity. With age come scars, stretch marks, and sun damage. Unsightly vascularity and pigmentation may also appear as time goes on.
Some combination of these skin problems affects nearly all Australians as they age. What’s important to understand is that each unique skin problem requires the application of a specific treatment technology to deliver the best aesthetic outcome.
For this reason, no single-wavelength laser can optimally treat each specific need.
In this article, the skin specialists at Platinum Dermatology share exciting news about the newest generation of integrated laser and light treatments for skin resurfacing available in our Ultimo practice.
Platinum Dermatology’s Laser Skin Resurfacing Basics
Also known as laser resurfacing and fractional resurfacing, skin resurfacing is a treatment to reverse the unappealing effects of sun exposure, ageing and lifestyle habits on the quality, colour and texture of skin.* Laser skin resurfacing taps into the body’s natural ability to regenerate, an ability that decreases as we age.
Lasers evenly and precisely remove damaged layers of skin without chemicals or mechanical abrasion. As your natural healing response is triggered, your body produces new healthy skin, which results in a smoother, more toned appearance, and fresh, vibrant skin. The treatment is fast and effective. Few significant complications are associated with laser skin resurfacing.*
Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing corrects a variety of conditions:
- Wrinkling around the eyes and mouth
- Enlarged oil glands on the nose
- Warts
- Birthmarks
- Liver spots
- Aged and sun-damaged skin
- Skin laxity in the lower eyelid area
- Skin blotchiness
- Pigmentation problems
- Scars from acne or chickenpox
- Textural abnormalities
- Pre-cancerous skin growths
Customised Laser Skin Resurfacing
Sciton’s Multi-Platform laser suite and fractionated CO2 laser give Platinum Dermatology’s skilled skin specialists more options in treating the wide variety of skin conditions listed above with one compact, integrated system. Treatment with any of this device’s modalities can effectively reduce the signs of visible ageing on the face. The downtime is short and the rejuvenating effects are long-lasting.* Some skin conditions, such as wrinkles that develop due to muscle use, may benefit from maintenance treatment over time.
This technologically advanced laser suite combines fractional ablative and non-ablative lasers and pulsed light technologies. This allows our skincare specialists to tailor personalised treatment regimens that meet the cosmetic, medical, and even lifestyle needs of our patients.
Options for Skin Resurfacing Treatments
Resurfacing lasers are either ablative or non-ablative.
- Ablative (wounding) lasers use rapid pulses of high intensity light to remove thin layers at the surface of damaged skin. This process smooths and tightens skin, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles and correcting pigmentation problems.
- Non-ablative (non-wounding) lasers are less invasive. They stimulate collagen growth and tighten the underlying skin to erase visible signs of facial ageing.
In addition to lasers, BroadBand Light (BBL)/Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapies enabled by our multi-platform laser provide significant value for facial rejuvenation. At Platinum Dermatology, we find that offering all three treatments helps our patients balance the results they desire with the amount of downtime they are willing/able to tolerate.*

Full Field vs. Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing and More
In a treatment known as a Micro Laser Peel, our skin specialists remove a thin layer of damaged skin cells. Most skin areas can be treated, including the chest and hands, although it is most commonly used on the face and neck. Patients at Platinum Dermatology have told us that they appreciate the way their formerly tired-looking skin has become vibrant and alive.
Beyond the Micro Peel, there are two additional treatments that our Sciton powerhouse allows us to perform: full field, and fractional skin resurfacing.*
- Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing – In contrast to full field laser skin resurfacing, in fractional resurfacing, the laser removes pinpoint columns of skin, rather than the whole skin surface. This leaves the surrounding tissue intact and that intact tissue promotes rapid healing in the treated area when the resurfacing treatment is complete.
- Full Field Laser Skin Resurfacing – In this approach to facial rejuvenation, our dermatologists use a laser beam to remove a layer of skin in the treatment area. As part of the natural healing process, the body replaces these lost cells with a fresh, healthy layer of skin. The new skin looks fresher and more radiant, giving our patients a more youthful complexion.
Full field laser resurfacing treatments can be calibrated by our expert team to affect a shallow or deeper layer of cells. Shallow treatments are good for fine lines, sunspots, and dull, tired-looking skin. Deeper laser facial treatments are useful for improving skin tone and texture, as well as eliminating deep wrinkles. An advantage of full field laser resurfacing is its ability to effectively rejuvenate difficult-to-treat facial imperfections such as crow’s feet and the lines that form above the upper lip.*
It is common for patients at our practice to see significant improvement for more pronounced skin conditions in a single treatment, with better, more pleasing results possible with further sessions. Over the course of a year, the skin will continue to improve in tone and texture. In fact, the effects of laser resurfacing can last for many years, although the normal ageing process means that wrinkles and expression lines will reoccur usually after 7 years.*
Fortunately, laser skin resurfacing can be repeated on an as-needed basis.
