For the New Year, Platinum Dermatology is urging our patients to go on a diet, though not the kind of diet you might think. Rather than a reducing diet, our skincare specialists are recommending a food regimen that will help people plump up their skin, making it look soft, radiant, and youthful.

If you’ve been curious about the trending topic of beauty from the inside out, then today’s article is just for you. We share secrets from the grocery aisle and talk about the foods you should be eating for your skin type.

The Right Foods for Different Skin Types

As medical doctors, the dermatologists at our practice are well versed in the links between nutrition and good health. Their training makes them uniquely qualified to diagnose skin problems and determine which therapies will be most effective in combating those problems. They also offer do-it-yourself strategies for home skincare, including tips on nutrition.

There’s nothing new about eating for beauty. A healthy diet has always been the foundation for a gorgeous body, but your food choices also affect how your skin looks and ages. For example:

  • Dry/Sensitive Skin – Vegetables are an essential part of everyone’s diet and should be eaten on a regular basis, especially for those with dry skin. Creamy avocados are loaded with Omega-9 fatty acids, which reduce redness and irritation.
  • Oily Skin – Fruits that have a high water content, pineapples and grapefruit, for example, keep oily skin hydrated and pores open. Fresh herbs and spices such as ginger, rosemary, basil, thyme and oregano contain high levels of anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants, which work to give oily skin a healthy appearance.
  • Acne-Prone Skin – Seaweed is a natural anti-inflammatory that will help soothe red and painful pimples, reducing acne flare-ups.
  • For Mature Skin – Salmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which have proven to have a dramatic effect on visible signs of ageing on the face and elsewhere on the body.

Sparklers with fresh, no-sugar-added organic juices are another wonderful way to feed your skin. This one, featuring cranberries and grapefruit is a healthy way to rehydrate and enjoy a generous serving of skin-friendly nourishment:

1 cup each fresh cranberry juice, fresh grapefruit juice, sparkling mineral water
Juice of 1/2 lime

Combine ingredients in 2 tall glasses, adding 1/2 cup of each juice, 1/2 cup sparkling mineral water, and a squeeze of lime to each glass. Stir, add ice, and serve with a slice of lime.
Cranberries and citrus fruits are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C that will boost your immunity as cold and flu season rolls around. Drink up, and if you listen carefully, you’ll hear your skin say, “Thank you!”
