Platinum Dermatology is based in Ultimo, but our skin specialists are part of a worldwide community of experts dedicated to fighting the visible signs of ageing. We’re excited to report on work being done by our colleagues in Canada and around the world.
Today, we are sharing exciting information about the effectiveness of light therapy for facial rejuvenation. It comes from a study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and then presented at the 23rd World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver held in June this year. At that event, Dr Patrick Bitter, Jr., considered to be the pre-eminent pioneer in the use of pulsed light technology for skin rejuvenation, presented findings from his study “Long Term Evaluation of the Anti-Ageing Effects of Broadband Light Therapy.”
The study is the first long-term, visual and clinical evaluation of BBL treatments. The conclusions reached by researchers provide welcome news for anyone eager to maintain a more youthful appearance.
What Researchers Learned About BBL & Anti-Ageing
Bitter asked 500 evaluators to analyse clinical before-and-after photographs of 15 study participants who had undergone a BBL treatment. The participants ranged in age from 38 to 69, and represented a broad range of skin types.
Those selected for participation were treated with the same Sciton BroadBand Light device that we use at Platinum Dermatology. It is the gold standard in light technology for facial rejuvenation. With the Sciton’s 15 X 45 mm spot size and rapid repetition rate, we are able to treat patients quickly and effectively. Furthermore, since each pulse is cooled to the selected temperature, our patients enjoy an unprecedented level of comfort during treatment.
Although the “after” photographs for the study were taken an average of nine years after the treatment, evaluators reported that participants appeared to have aged just two years or less.
In his conclusion, Dr Bitter states:
“The results of this study demonstrate that patients who maintain a regular annual or biannual regimen of BBL treatment can both reduce and delay the long-term signs of skin aging such as photodamage, telangiectases, fine lines and wrinkles, and skin laxity, in a natural looking way.”
8 Skin Conditions that Platinum Dermatology Treats with BroadBand Light
BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy is a type of pulsed light therapy. It is a non-ablative skin rejuvenation treatment for a wide range of skin conditions. Our skin specialists in Ultimo use it to address common complaints including:
- Sun damage and sun spots (including freckles)
- Poor skin texture
- Uneven skin tone
- Pregnancy mask (melasma)
- Broken capillaries
- Skin spots – liver spots and age spots
- Dark circles around the eyes
- Facial wrinkles, fine lines, and enlarged pores
During treatment, the BBL energy is absorbed by the unwanted melanin (pigment cells) which first turn darker and then naturally fade or slough off in about two weeks. Pulsed light also penetrates the outer layer of the skin and uses heat to stimulate underlying cells, promoting collagen production that naturally helps revitalise the skin’s appearance.
The skin specialists at Platinum Dermatology also use BBL to address vascular skin conditions including
- Facial flushing
- Spider veins
- Rosacea
